The Dam Breaks

Edwards has admitted the affair, and admitted lying about it to everyone, but he has denied the little baby girl of Ms. Hunter is his. This seems weird to me. The damaging thing is that he cheated on his wife, dying from cancer. That's about as low as you can go without actually committing a crime. Who cares if the kid is his or not?

It certainly does not explain why he visited both Ms. Hunter and the kid in the hotel in July, if she's not his and he was there for more sex (always the default motive for nearly any man). Nor does the lack of parentage explain the over $114,000 expenditure by his campaign to Ms. Hunter for very little in the way of blog videos. Hush money? Is that legal?

Another Democratic sex scandal with real sex.

You know, the confession, such as it is, doesn't make me dislike Edwards any more. You can't actually get below what I thought of the man.

The Silence of the Lambs

My ex mother in law used to buy all the trashy tabloids and appeared to believe them, even the bat boy pictures. I have never been a fan but I don't think the king of the lot has gotten there by lying about people all the time. The National Enquirer, at least in my mind, is more reliable than the New York Times. So, although I'm not not interested in the Edwards/Hunter love child story, I am intensely interested in, and truly puzzled by, the lack of coverage in the media. Apparently, I'm not alone.

Money quote:

It's August. It's the slowest news month of the year. Newspapers are dying on the vine.

But nobody wants to touch a sordid tale about a politician's love life?

Former Rep. Gary Condit should have been so lucky.

Bill Clinton, Larry Craig, and Ted Kennedy can only gaze in wonder at the dearth of coverage.

In February, the New York Times...spilled barrels of ink, and clear-cut a forest to tell the world that -- hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean? -- Sen. John McCain allegedly had had an affair. This was great stuff, until someone bothered to vet the story.

By those standards, the Enquirer's reporting on Edwards is Pulitzer grade stuff. (They have a picture.) The guy's up for a cabinet post at least, maybe even veep -- well, not any more.

But somehow, it's just not relevant that he won't answer questions about why he was hiding from a couple of trashy tabloid reporters in a bathroom at the Beverly Hills Hilton at 2:30 a.m.?
