Some Smart Girls Are Easy

In college I sometimes used a very esoteric poet I had just read and studied to try (and, alas, usually to fail) to get smart girls to sleep with me. With Neruda I had minor success. I've used T. S. Eliot, just as our President did with the non-composit girlfriend Alex McNear (except I memorized The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock rather than The Waste Land, there's nothing sexy about The Waste Land). I think Obama's Eliot ploy worked. He seems to have snowed Ms. McNear as well as Meghan Daum, who writes hagiographically (and apparently without a trace of self awareness of how silly she sounds) about the question her piece's headline poses: Is Obama "Too brainy to be president?"

I'm not making this up; it's real. Go here to see.

Here is the college brilliance of our President, preserved by Ms. McNear and as quoted but Ms. Daum:

He calls "The Waste Land" "an ecstatic vision which runs from Münzer to Yeats" and encourages McNear to "read [Eliot's] essay on Tradition and the Individual Talent, as well as Four Quartets, when he's less concerned with depicting moribund Europe.... Remember how I said there's a certain kind of conservatism which I respect more than bourgeois liberalism — Eliot is of this type."
[What does Münzer (Müntzer?) have to do with The Waste Land? I say nothing at all, but I'm apparently less brainy than the President, or Ms. McNear or Ms. Daum, although I'm not the only one to think the quoted portions are both pretentious and a little vapid.]

Ms. Daub's breathless work here is just another version of the President is the smartest man to ever hold the office.

Yeah, right.

Until I see his SATs and his transcripts from Occidental and Columbia, he is a 100 IQ Chance the Gardener and certainly the worst President we've had to suffer though since Wilson.

Hurr yeah Obama's a dum dum. But not ol' George W Bush. He went to YALE, remember? He MUST be smart. Remember saying that? What did you major in again? English? Care to define the word 'hypocrisy' for me?

Coincidentally, Thomas Sowell was just on Uncommon Knowledge, interviewed by NRO's Peter Robinson about his book, Intellectuals and Society. Sowell is much like Milton Friedman in his ability to brush aside the fluff 'n stuff and cut to the core of issues. Time watching is well spent. Part I here:

Sorry about the long link. I should have "tinyurl'd" it.

Still having anger management problems I see, Andrew. The difference is that I have seen W's grades, and Kerry's, but no one has seen Obama's, What's up with that? And yes, I think everyone who went to Yale is smart because I only got wait-listed there. Hypocrisy is the practice of professing standards, beliefs, etc., contrary to one's real character or actual behaviour, esp the pretence of virtue and piety. You might keep that definition in mind when you throw the term at someone like a shoe. I might have been partisan about the President but I was not a hypocrite.

Love Sowell. Haven't had time to watch that series at NRO.

Any college kid with half a brain will attempt sexual conquest by discoursing on esoteric poets or by athletic prowess or somesuch tomfoolery. It's not a measure of intelligence that he does so (it may be a measure of his target's intelligence whether he succeeds). It IS a measure of the witlessness of today's media that some columnist apparently thinks that spouting poetic babble equates to being "brainy."
Some of the smartest people I have ever met never graduated university. An undergraduate degree has become a first-rung credential, nothing more. And at least Bush 43 used his Harvard MBA in business. Whatever Obama may have learned at Harvard Law is obscured by his overweening arrogance and narcissism.

FWIW, this just popped up on TaxProf Blog:

I'm not so much a snob that I think only those who went to college or beyond are smart. Look, for example, at Mark Steyn, Mark Twain, Sydney Pollack, Rush Limbaugh. Did Steve Gates graduate? But if you did go to college, I want to know where (the mere choice tells me something, usually) and if your letting people call you the smartest anything, I want to see your test scores and transcript. I'm just funny that way. Thanks for all you comments. They are very good, as are Andrews in a slightly more hostile vein.

I like discussing issues (name calling, not so much.) I'm the first to admit that I know very little about a lot of topics. How do we learn if we do not listen?

Unfortunately, there are 'way too many among us who believe that they already know it all, and so find no need to listen....

Whenever anyone accused George Bush of stupidity (a very popular thing to do during his presidency) you would brush it off with "But he went to Yale, he must be smart." Now you're the one doing the same thing with a president who went to Harvard Law School. Perhaps it's not hypocrisy, but it means that you can't get upset when people start accusing future president Mitt Romney of being a moron.

Notice that I am not calling the President a moron, I'm just setting him at normal pending further information. So I will take offense at anyone calling either W or Romney a moron when both (like Obama) attended Harvard after graduation from Yale and Brigham Young respectively.

Saw photos of your apartment in the ROK. Looks like your room at home. See ya', Bud.

Is 100 an average IQ? I honestly don't know.

And yeah, it's very similar. see ya 'round the 'net.

Yes, 100 is average. You're probably 125-135. I'm less than that, or at least I was so in High School. I could be smarter now.

I'm not that smart
