Thought of the Day

If Obama can rev up Democratic voters and win back some independents, and if his party can get everything right in terms of mechanics (fundraising, advertising, get-out-the-vote efforts, etc.), then perhaps with all these small changes the Democrats have a chance of protecting their House majority. Nevertheless, a poll here, a speech there only offers so much reassurance. Democrats should keep the panic button close by. It still might come in handy.

David Corn

Rev up the base? Win back some independents? Tall freakin' orders in the next 7 weeks. Mr. Corn clings for dear life to the recent Gallup poll finding the generic ballot tied. Never mind that the more reliable ones, regarding likely voters, have the Republican advantage at plus 12 and 13 respectively. Notice too all the caveats and wishful thinking. And then he ends with it may be as bad as every one believes. This is a Democratic true believer's pep talk.

I feel better already.

Rog,

One of us is insane per Albert Einstein: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Perhaps the GOP will retake the House at which time we can expect the same ineptitude of non governance or malgovernance that the GOP has consistently delivered over the last 30 years. It's hard for me be nostalgic for St. Ronald of Reagan--who can forget the S&L meltdown--but by comparison to the GOP congresses and presidents that followed him, he may well deserve beatification.

What we can we expect from the Party of No? More tax cuts for the uber rich b/c as we know tax cuts for the uber rich just result in the uber rich getting richer. They don't translate into actual jobs or increased tax revenues.

Can we expect less onerous government regulations? You know, those pesky environmental ones that try and protect our air and water?

And fer sure we don't need any stinkin' financial regulations b/c we believe in an unfettered free market so we can have dandy results like the subprime mortgage meltdown, you betcha!

How about another "off the books" unnecessary war a la Iraq. We sure received value for that conflict. Not only did we spend a trillion, lose billions, and render Iran the dominant country in the mid east, the devotion of resources in Iraq caused us to fail to prosecute the other "off the books" war in Afghanistan.

Of course if the GOP does retake the house, we can also expect sanctimonious Republicans will get caught with their pants down or off.

So whereas I am happy you feel better already, if the GOP were to retake the House, I ask myself, cui bono, inasmuch as the answer is not the United States of America.

The answer? John Stewart and the Daily Show.
