This Day in the History of Near Miracles on Ice

On this day in 1980, at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY, in a surprising upset, the United States Olympic hockey team defeated the Soviets 4-3. The U.S. went on to win the gold medal.

That was an awesome event. Al Michaels had an afro back then, and I know this because he called the game.

The best thing about knowing it would be a game, was the surprise goal for the USA at the end of the first period, when the Soviet defense let their guard down. The Soviets had stomped a mudhole in the ass of Team USA just weeks prior.

So they were taken a bit offguard, to say the least, when Team USA came out to win, instead of just trying to lose gracefully.

That's one of those historical goosebump memories, for me.

My wife had a ticket for the next game... Somewhere, she has pictures of the USA team as they and the crowd celebrate.

It was a very sweet moment after a rough 5 years starting with the fall of Saigon, Carter's election, the oil embargo against us, and the Soviet's invasion of Afghanistan. College kids beating red army regulars who did almost nothing but play hockey and beat up on NHL teams with ease. I'm going all misty just thinking about it.
