This Day in the History of Real Progress

On this day in 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, abolishing slavery, was declared in effect. So while first Republican President Abraham Lincoln didn't free the slaves, he fought a rough, bloody war to keep the South in the union so that the amended Constitution would do just that. He would have been there to free the slaves had a Democrat sore loser not shot him in the head.

No doubt John Wilkes Booth assasination was motivated by his party affiliation. Give it a rest, Roger, otherwise I will start researching atrocities committed by Republicans which are legion.
Bring it on! The political murders of our presidents were nearly all by lefties. Kennedy was killed by a Communist for Pete's sake! What have you got?
To a Democrat, Republican "atrocities" means things like tax cuts, national security...the list of evils goes on and on.
Right, Eirc, or that time during the Florida recount when the thugs vocally opposed Broward officials ignoring the law and recounting without observers, or the time Republicans stormed the stage and prevented someone from speaking...oh, wait, that one only the left does.
I seem to recall that John Chivington, who was responsible for teh sand Creek Massacre, was a member of the GOP.
Andrew Jackson--Trail of Tears--virtual father of the Democrat Party
The Sand Creek Massacre was a Republican atrocity. Huh, who knew. OK, what else do you have?
