This Day in the Long History of Arab A## Kickings

On this day in 1973, the Yom Kippur War (aka the October War and the Ramadan War) erupted in the Middle East as Egypt and Syria attacked Israel during the Yom Kippur holiday. After initial gains by Egyptian and Syrian forces, the Israeli Defense Forces got organized and then beat the snot out of the attacking Muslim armies who were hampered by Soviet technology and slow re-armament. The small anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles proved very deadly throughout the war and the Israelis had to improvise tactics on the fly to keep in the fight. We were flying replacement tanks to Israel almost immediately. This was the last clear butt-kicking the IDF delivered, although with a little IDF fine tuning, Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon is due one.
