This Day in the History of Great Film Noir Film Openings
On this day in 1941, John Houston's superior film treatment of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon opened. The film starred Humphrey Bogart as detective Sam Spade in as tough an anti-hero (with a narrow code) role as Bogart ever played (at least since The Petrified Forest). It gets better every time I see it. Peter Lorre, in a thin phase, is particularly good. There is also an interesting undercurrent regarding homosexuality which should provide a few film majors with senior theses. It also has the fascinating Webley-Fosbery .455 as a murder weapon. Very cool.

I first saw The Maltese Falcon when I was 12 or 13. Fast forward 20 years to around 1993 or so and I'm watching Ren And Stimpy on Nickelodeon with my kids. Every time Ren talks, I'm thinking "Where have I heard that voice before?", and then he utters this line to Stimpy: "You fat, bloated idiot!"
Fast forward another 10 years and I'm watching Falcon again and nearly bust a gut when Peter Lorre says to Sidney Greenstreet "You fat, bloated idiot!".
