This Day in the History of Western Failures

On this day in 1192, the Third Crusade ended with the Treaty of Jaffa between Richard the Lionhearted and Salah al-Din Yusuf Ibn Ayyub. For a while, at least, following the treaty, Christian pilgrims were granted access to Jerusalem. The Third Crusade was the last real effort to retake the Holy Land through force of arms, although the Crusades continued (with differing successes) and numbered in the low double digits by the end, 1291, when Europe had its hands full with the Mongols threatening to invade more than just Hungary, Poland and Lithuania.
