This Day in American History

On this day in 1886, the Haymarket Square Riot broke out as a result of a labor demonstration. The Anarchist and Communist inspired violence and backlash created a jumping off moment for the left leaning labor movement (and May day celebrations in the Communist nations). If ever there was a movement which morphed into a diminishing problem due to its success, it was the rise of Labor Unions.

This is fun. Communist countries celebrating May 1st. I definitely thought it was a socialist thing, not a commie plot. I might be mistaken, and probably am a commie myself since I walk for improved workers rights and come from the glorious communist oil-kingdom Norway.
Then again, the meaning of liberal in the US and Europe diverge by quite a lot. I for one would not call the views expressed on this blog as center right. In this commie state of mine, mr. Frail would be categorised as brown-nose right wing extremist.

Funny, I like Norwegians. Commmunism is international socialism. Naziism is national socialism and most of Western Europe is plain old socialism. Oil has made your nation wealthy and your socialism will last a long time. How much really can workers' rights be improved. Thanks for the comment (except for the brown-nose part).

Norway: Beautiful place and nice enough people one-on-one. And everyone with any common sense left by the late 1800s. (See also Ireland during the potato famine.)

I cannot express how glad I am that my ancestors had common sense.
