The Real Price of Freedom

Lorie Byrd, one of the southern women bloggers I try to read every day, has a column up at Townhall today titled The Price of Freedom. It's good, but I have a slightly shorter version.

The price of freedom is crime, because people are free not to obey the law.

Go read hers; it's not only longer, it's better.

R,

I caught Ali Alawi being interviewed on by John Stewart on the Daily show. I saw it yesterday afternoon so probably it aired live Weds night.

Stewart asked Alawi how it was in Iraq where the carnage of Va Tech is a daily event in spades. Please understand there was no politicalization in the question a la Paul Campos.

So having read Lorie Byrd's column, which reaffirms what I already knew--that the carnage visited upon Va Tech is the price we pay for living in an open society--the carnage visited upon Iraq on a daily basis also reaffirms something I already know--that an open society will never work in Iraq.

Thankfully in our society, Columbine and Baily and Nickel Mines and Va Tech are isolated occurrances involving attacks upon innocents at the conclusion of which the attacker(s) self execute.

I do not think a day goes by in Iraq when some suicide bomber self executes while murdering innocents.

Inasmuch as these attacks are not aimed at coalition forces, I have no doubt they will continue no matter how long we stay or when we leave.

Now there's a depressing thought for a Friday, or any other day of the week for that matter.

Every time you say Iraq is different from us westerners, the first thought that flits through my head is 'racist'. My analysis doesn't stop there, but it's the first thing. Just so you know. I'm not so sure the continued suicide bombings are not being perpetrated to drive us out or that they won't stop after we've left. Time will tell. Back to Byrd's column, price of open society, price of freedom--tomato, tomahto. Thanks for all your interesting comments. I'll post about the Petition for Cert. I just finished.

It is kind of stupid when you describe it as you did, but I have to say that it sems to be working with some of us (not me).
