Ahmadinejad...... Go Ahead Punk, Make My Day.

As a child at the age of 10 years old, I recall one of the more tempestuous of politcal climates in the USA, during the Iran Hostage Crisis, and the run up to the 1980 presidential election, between incumbent Jimmy Carter, and former California Governor, Ronald Reagan. I also recall, my father, being a retired career navy man, shaking his head in anger and disgust, every night during the news, as another redundant update was given, regarding the hostages still being held in Iran. The absolute most vivid memory I have of that campaign season, was when a reporter asked candidate Reagan, during a very lighthearted Q and A session, as Reagan was walking towards his waiting limo, " What will you do about the Iranian Hostage Crisis if elected ?? " (paraphrased of course ) Reagan's face became almost angry, as he answered something to the effect of "Oh.....I have a plan for Iran....don't you worry." I'm not sure why that memory sticks out in my head to this day, but right now, I can't think of a more needed moment in our history, that a "plan for Iran", specifically the plan I believe Reagan to have been inferring, be implemented....stat.

I am not a war monger, by any means......however, when a leader of a nation state, on numerous occasions, not only calls for, but decisively says that the destruction of another country is their goal, not to mention inevitability.........one should take notice. Unless you have been living under a rock, you would know that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has repeatedly threatened Israel with such an outcome.........no specifics....just threats. Now, he seems to want to throw the USA into the mix........

Israel and the United States will soon be destroyed, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday during a meeting with Syria's foreign minister, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) website said in a report.
"Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad… assured that the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel will soon come to the end of their lives," the Iranian president was quoted as saying.

Yet Iran's nuclear program is for "peaceful purposes".......I'm sure it is.....seeing as how Iran has no natural resources for energy at all......sarcasm meter way on..............Reagan sent a message to Iran 27 years ago, and whether by coincidence or just plain common sense, the Iranians released the American hostages after said message........Although I am no advocate of the USA ever sending troops into another islamic country for regime change or nation building.......it's time to make Iran flinch.....maybe writhe even. No more messages.

Time for a proverbial Dirty Harry moment, with the islamic republic of Iran.

Comments:
Mark,

W/ all due respect, I think that your interpretation of Mr. Reagan's "message" may be at serious variance w/ the facts.

Certainly at present, a message is being sent to both Syria and Iran w/ the deployment of the USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier group to the Persian Gulf in December and the current deployment of the USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier group to join the first group. The carrier groups serve no tactical purpose for ongoing operations in Iraq.

W/ repect to that jackanapes Ahmadinejad, I suspect he actually was involved in the keeping the Iran hostages prisoner in 1979 as clearly his wardrobe of leisure suits date from that sartorial era which fashion has been consigned to the dust heap of 7th Avenue and Savile Row.

Ahmadinejad's rhetoric is probably posturing but any time the head of a foreign state publishes threats such as "Iarael must be wiped off the map" he must be taken seriously and at his word.

Some analysts believe that Ahmadinejad is hugging Hugo Chavez, hosting Holocaust denial conventions, and mouthing off in the intrnational arena b/c he is doing so poorly domestically. The results of last weeks municipal coucil elections demonstrated a serious backlash against Ahmadinejad. The jobless rate in Iran is soaring; many educated younger Iranians don't see much of a future; and many Iranians are tiring of Ahmadinejad popping off internationally while he accomplishes nothing domestically.

Hey there Tony...thanks for responding. Reagan's message, could have meant any number of things at that time....I know how it was taken by adults, and then explained to me as a ten year old....You point out somethning that I should have included in my post. I have read in numerous publications in the last couple of years, that the people of Iran, seem to have a pro western lean....it's the government that seems to be the problem here ( isn't it always ? ;o] ) and Mahmooud is experiencing less than favorable results from the people, with his ranchorings.....nevertheless, these are insidious threats being made, all the while, they are setting up with North Korea to help get nuke testing underway, underground style....is that for "peaceful purposes " ?

The second carrier group moving in, is I hope, the Dirty Harry moment I was speaking of.

Thanks for commenting !

Mark,

This is written in haste as I have documents to draft and miles to go b/f I sleep.

My understanding is that when the hostages were seized, the U.S. froze Iranian assets in US banks in the approx amount of 8 billion USD. Iran agreed to release the hostages; er agreed to release the 8 billion USD. I don't recall any "make my day" messages but I was studying for the bar exam and did not evn see the Miracle on Ice hockey game live.

Welcome to the party, pal. Good analysis, but we can't make sure Iran no longer has nuclear weapons after any sort of bombing and keep them back from the Perisan Gulf and the narrow straits without an invasion of some degree. Are you advocating Clint being the punk with a toothless bark (to mix metaphors beyond redemption).

I've always thought Tel Aviv was the target of choice for Iranian nukes, Ciz. Things are not going well on the home front in the former Persia and I think Tony can be forgiven for hoping the tough talk is therefore just bluster. Don't we all hope that? But I'm with you; Ahmadinejad is as serious as a heart attack. If he's not stopped, nukes will be used.

Roger and clzdwh,

If you believe that Iran would use nuclear weapons against Israel, which I doubt simply b/c of the geography--how do explain that your strike against the Jews also had a profound deleterious effect upon millions of Muslims and Christians?--what do believe is the called for strategy in countering the this threat?

The problem, with Iran having nukes, extends beyond Iran, having nukes. They have been fighting proxy wars vis a vis hezbollah for over 20 years now.....Iran, as a country per se, is not so much the entity that I am at all worried about, carrying out a nuke attack on Israel or anybody else for that matter......However, this clown has espoused his firm belief in the soon to be coming presence of the 12th Imam.....nothing scares me more that a religious fundy, who rationalizes a world view that best conforms to their angle of their God........common sense be damned for that type of person.

Mark,

I concur. Fundmentalism is a reason why some of us have a problem w/ the president who seems to bw astep away from the Red Heifer Gang.

T

Tony,

Putting W in the same pile of fundy,s that the Mahmoouds and Al Sadr's of the world exist in....is ludicrous.....just sayin....

Happy Friday
