Save Farris

Michelle Malkin has this kinda weird story at her site about the secret travels of Farris Hassan, a 16-year-old from Florida. This guy shames me. The wildest thing, in the same vein, I ever did was leave school in Andover without permission and hitchhike to Groton. Not quite as dangerous as hitching to Baghdad. Ah, youth.

Here is part of the essay he wrote on his travels:

"There is a struggle in Iraq between good and evil, between those striving for freedom and liberty and those striving for death and destruction."

"Those terrorists are not human but pure evil. For their goals to be thwarted, decent individuals must answer justice's call for help. Unfortunately altruism is always in short supply. Not enough are willing to set aside the material ambitions of this transient world, put morality first, and risk their lives for the cause of humanity. So I will."

Hard to argue with an eyewitness, particularly an idealistic, young one.

You may want to consider a different point of view:

Do a little Googling. The whole world is talking about this kid, and people from Switzerland to France to French Canadia seem to have a general consensus: if more young people decided the human condition is worth more than their money, ealth, or safety, the world would be a very different place. Or, as many people have agreed, "the kid has serious stones, man."

I'm not saying it was bright, but it was brave, and an example to the materialistic humans in this world that the truth is impossible to decipher from a distance.

He's a young man now - he's old enough to take his life and future into his own hands. People his age have been killing other people in wars for centuries - what would happen if more of them faought for peace?

I don't think I was critical of the boy. Indeed, I said his audacity put my tiny rebellion in 1970 to shame. Everyone I think is kind of proud of the guy. Not a lot of 16 year olds fought (only 1 in Viet Nam I know of) but lots and lots of 18 and 19 year olds. You have a point there. Thanks for the comment.
