Some Pictures are More Interesting Than Others





Here's one of the several holes on Mars that have been in the news lately. They are all clearly not craters as they lack the debris thrown up around the edge. In this one, there is enough resolution to see that the hole goes straight down some distance as the sunlight is illuminating the roughly vertical wall of the hole. The theory is that these are collapsed areas of a lava tube below the surface, or something like that, but not the result of water erosion. Are there similar ones on Earth? Indeed there are.
